Itinerary

At the quarries, you’ll witness the extraction and carving of sillar, a white volcanic stone that has given Arequipa its nickname of the «White City.» Our guide will explain the traditional extraction process and how this material has been used over the centuries to build the city’s impressive colonial buildings.

We’ll continue our tour to the Culebrillas quarry, a magical place where sillar formations create an almost surreal landscape. Here, we’ll walk through narrow passages and admire the stone carvings made by local stonemasons. These carvings depict religious and cultural figures, and are a display of the artisans’ art and devotion.

You will have time to explore and take photographs of this stunning landscape before heading back to the city. On the way back, we will pass through some of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Arequipa, where you can see how sillar has been used in local architecture.

Finally, we will drop you off at your hotel, completing an educational and fascinating morning on the Sillar Route.
